FAQ
- Alu-Rim® is paintable on both sides: Rim up is perfect for flow art and pours affording a mess free self-framed appearance. The flip side yields a 3D decorative rounded edge look that is ready for hanging.
- Anodized aluminum is smooth, lightweight, and archival. It does not warp, release gases, absorb or transfer moisture. It is an excellent substrate for a wide variety of artistic mediums.
- Alu-Rim® is manufactured in the USA. The aluminum from which it is made is one of the most effectively and efficiently recycled materials.
Simply, it is an environmentally friendly electrochemical process, that creates a clear aluminum oxide coating that is durable, smooth, weather resistant and pretty.
The micro-porous oxide coating, which is the same mineral as rubies and sapphires, when applied on aluminum, has just the right amount of adhesion for most paints and pigments. The anodic coating protects both the aluminum substrate from environmental corrosion and any applied pigments from degradation and possible color change. An untreated aluminum substrate is highly reactive. Don't trust your art work to a raw aluminum surface! |
Our manufacturing factory strives for precision, but diameters may vary by as much as ± 0.25".
The outside diameters are as follows:
6in-6in, 9in-9.2in, 12in-12.2in, 18in-18.6in
We do our best to send you a clean beautiful surface, but fingerprint oils and airborne dust do happen. We suggest cleaning the surface with isopropyl alcohol of at least 50% strength (70% or 91% is even better). Remember to let it completely dry before you begin!
There is often no need to use a primer. We recommend trying a small test area before embarking on a large project.
Due to the porous nature of anodized aluminum, it is an excellent surface for paint adhesion. Acrylics, oil paints, watercolors, gouaches, inks and most graphite pencils and pens have been used on anodized aluminum panels with success.
No, these are aluminum “canvases”. You can wash off the paint, or peel it off, but not once resin is applied. At that point you have a piece of art that should last a lifetime!
When you use the Alu-Rim® with the lip side up, you can hang it by attaching a saw tooth or Z clip with resin. Some customers tell us they have also used Command Strips.
If you use the side with the lip side down, the lip makes it very easy to hang on a nail.

We have tested Au-Rims® outside for 3 years through seasons of heat and ice. The product is stable. It does not warp, rust, peel.
We cannot guarantee quality of resins, but suggest the resin coating absorb UV, especially if art is placed in sun.
